“Science x Life” Science Workshops (On-site and Online Programmes)

To promote science reading to a wider audience, Science Promotion Unit and Hong Kong Public Libraries jointly organise Popular Science Reading Workshops, in which local scientists are invited to share their popular science books and provide interesting activities for participants to experience science from the books. In addition, the Fluorescent Creative Art Workshop of "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Science in Art" will be held for participants to learn the science of fluorescence and phosphorescence while creating their own night-glowing artworks.

Popular Science Reading Workshop: Exploring Marine World (Playback)

 

Dr. Karen Mak will introduce her latest popular science book. She will explore the vast ocean and reveal the STEM knowledge behind. In addition, she will work with the participants to make a periscope using beverage cartons.

Suitable for: Age 6-12 (Each child must be accompanied by a parent)

Important notes:

  • Onsite participants are required to bring along two empty milk/juice cartons (around 1 litre) for making the periscope.
  • Online participants are required to prepare the following materials and tools for making the periscope: two empty milk/juice cartons (around 1 litre), two pieces of mirror (one side of the mirror should be shorter than 9cm), cutter, ruler, marker pen, scissors and adhesive tape.

Popular Science Reading Workshop: A Down-to-Earth Astrophysicist (Playback)

 

Dr. David Yu, who is an astrophysicist, will introduce his popular science book. He will share his journey in doing astrophysics research as well as promoting science to the public. He will also introduce various stargazing tools for participants to enjoy stargazing in leisure time.

Ms. Winsome Lee, who is a forensic anthropologist, will introduce her popular science books. Furthermore, she will lead the participants to identify the dead and reveal their hidden stories using knowledge of forensic anthropology in a case-detective activity.

Extension Activity of “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Science in Art”

Fluorescent Creative Art Workshop*

 

In this workshop, the participants will understand the difference between fluorescence and phosphorescence as well as the science behind. They can act as a sci-artist and make use of materials of different properties to create their own glow-in-the-dark artwork and experience the fun of integrating science with art.
